BII and ONOS Sign MOU to Boost the Development of SDN Controller

    Date : 2016-8-23 16:26:59

August 2016, Beijing Internet Institute (BII) and Open Networking Operating System (ONOS) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) in the area of SDN controller. Upon the execution of the MOU, BII has become a member of ONOS officially in collaborator level. BII and ONOS will share research resources and related practical experience, develop the controllers, catalyze the maturity of the ONOS community and facilitate the development of SDN controllers. Concerning testing, BII will authorize ON.Lab to use the OFsuite testing tools to conduct the tests to ameliorate and improve the ONOS controller capabilities.

ONOS, as the industry-wide first carrier-oriented controller and an open-source community, has more than 50 partners in its sphere and has obtained intensive support from ONF, ONS and ONRC. Referring to the cooperation, the CTO of ONOS William Snow puts that: “the ONOS community welcomes BII as an official ONOS collaborator. BII has a long history of leadership in testing and we value their experience and expertise. We look forward to collaborating with BII to not only test ONOS, but also to advance the state of the art SDN controller testing.”

Meanwhile, Mr. Li Zhen, director of BII-Global SDN Certified and Testing Center (SDNCTC) emphasizes during an interview that: “we hope this cooperation will serve as a good Launchpad to boost the maturity and development of the ONOS community with our joint efforts, and that in addition, BII will collaborate with all the outstanding developers in the world to provide more performance analysis approaches and tools to the SDN controller users.” It is learnt that upon the execution of the agreement, BII will, in collaboration with ON.Lab, conduct all-round tests of ONOS and assist it to complete the test report. The tests in detail contain controller performance, the largest number of the switches managed, capability of topology discovery, capability of distributing flow tables, the throughput and lapse of processing OpenFlow messages, time of controllers on establishing end-to-end paths, etc.

The Center successively published RYU Controller Performance Test Report, OpenDaylight Beryllium Controller Performance Test Report and ONOS Controller Performance Test Report this year, and launched business-oriented controller test. The reports published use independently developed controller testing tool—OFsuite_Performance which not only support performance test, but also can provide multi-controller connection, TLS encryption channel connection, test results visualization and other additional features.

In the future, BII-SDNCTC will use OFsuite to conduct its SDN controller testing business for the world and continuously help organizations of open source to validate their SDN controller’s overall functions to facilitate the maturity and completeness of the products. It will also provide detailed data support, provides reference for users to select high-performance SDN controllers and catalyze the SDN industry into maturity.

About ON.Lab (Open Networking Lab)

The Open Networking Lab (ON.LAB) is a non-profit organization founded by Software-Defined Networking (SDN) inventors and leaders from Stanford University and UC Berkeley to foster an open source community to develop tools and platforms to realize the full potential of SDN.

About ONOS (Open Network Operating System)

The Open Network Operating System (ONOS) is a software defined networking (SDN) OS for service providers that has scalability, high availability, high performance and abstractions to make it easy to create apps and services. The platform is based on a solid architecture and has quickly matured to be feature rich and production ready.

About BII-SDNCTC (Global SDN Certified Testing Center)

As a third-party, neutral SDN testing and certification lab, Global SDN Certified Testing Center (SDNCTC) is committed to the research and the popularization of SDN (Software Defined Network) technologies. The center enthusiastically devotes to making the rules for the test and establishing a testing and certification system, whereupon enhancing SDN technical standards and commercial deployment.
